老三屆(1968年在校的初中、高中生三屆學生)幾乎全部前往農村。文革期間知識青年總人數達到1600多萬人，有1/10的城市人口來到鄉村，這是人類第一次反都市化的行動，在工業化期間從城市到鄉村的人口大遷徙。
