By 1588, according to a Relation by Salazar, the new town of Nueva Segovia had an alcalde-mayor and other officials, a fort manned by 40soldiers, a "royal hospital," an Augustinian ''monastery" with 2 priests,
and 40 Spanish "citizens" who were encome11deros (B&R, VII, 37).
