Capital=Tenochtitlan "the Venice of the new world"

One of the most advanced empire ever:
Used new tech, like dikes, cosways (bridges), aqueducts and a messenger system of relay runners along their superhighways (connected continually growing empire)

Chinampas=small islands built in lanes by weaving sticks and piling mud. Great food supply (creates new land to farm on), helping to fuel their massive army

Many sacrifices, making avg. life expectancy 37. Human blood=very valuable to Aztecs

Built a massive temple at center of Tenochtitlan, symbolizing their power

When Hernan Cortez appears with thousands of members of rival tribes in 1519, Montezuma II appears on the bridge with army of 100s of thousands (he was alerted of their presence by the relay runners)

Montezuma lets them in, but they secretly kidnap him and use him as a mouthpiece. One day they take over a sacrifice and kill the attendants, sparking a war.

Spaniards attempt to escape in the middle of the night, but are weighed down by their loot, allowing the Aztecs to catch them on the cosway. A few escape, but many die. They destroy the aqueduct, regathering forces and waiting them out.

On may 15th, 1520, 50,000 allies and 600 spaniards attack defenders on grand cosway. After months of fighting, the entire city and population is destroyed, and 20 million additional Aztecs die from disease brought by Spanish

The Spanish have won, and level the city to create their own city (Mexico City)
