The Cuban Missile Crisis was a confrontation between America and the Soviet Union that almost brought them to the brink of war. In May 1960 Nikita Khrushchev promised to defend Cuba, and he installed ballistic missiles in Cuba. These missiles were a massive threat to America and could be launched quickly. After multiple Soviet shipments to Cuba, president John F. Kennedy blockaded the island to prevent further arms from coming into Cuba. After a long stalemate, on October 28th, Khrushchev crumbled first and stopped work on missiles in Cuba. Kennedy also promised to take out nuclear weapons in Turkey. Both countries eventually fulfilled their promises. This event was the closest the world had ever come to a nuclear war.
