Neutrality Acts (1 agos 1935 anni – 1 agos 1937 anni)
Descrizione:
Majority of the American people were nationalistic but opposed to fascism and militarism. The people were hoping that the U.S. wouldn’t join a foreign war. The isolationists were strongest in the Midwest and in the Republican party. As a result, several committees and groups were formed among the isolationists. One of these committees was the Nye Committee. Created by Senator Gerald Nye of North Dakota, the committee pushed the idea that the world war was to serve the likes of the bankers and arms manufacturers. Another committee was the America First Committee. This group was primarily created out of the alarm of FDR’s bro-British policies. This group of isolationists engaged speakers to travel the nation and warn people against reengaging in European troubles. The isolationists of this time grew powerful in Congress and eventually held majority in 1938. Several acts were passed by the isolationists to keep the U.S. out of war. These neutrality Acts, as they were known, had 3 parts to them. The first Neutrality Act of 1935 authorized the president to prohibit shipments of arms and to forbid citizens from traveling on belligerent nations’ ships. The Second Neutrality Act of 1936 forbade the extension of loans and credits to belligerents. Lastly, the neutrality Act of 1937 forbade the shipping of arms to opposing sides in the civil war happening in Spain. All in all, the isolationists in the states made it their mission to keep the U.S. from joining another world war.
