Split in the Republican party (1 gen 1900 anni – 1 gen 1920 anni)
Descrizione:
Several progressives in the Republican party were unhappy with Taft’s presidency and what he had accomplished. They disliked him for several reasons such as his failure to lower tariffs even though he said he would during his campaign, but instead the Payne-Aldrich tariff was passed which raised the cost of imports. They also disliked his secretary of interior, Richard Ballinger, who did more harm to the environment than help when he gave private businesses access to lands in Alaska which were previously closed. His unwillingness to do anything to reduce dictatorial powers of Joseph Cannon angered progressives even more. What mostly split up the party was when Taft supported the more conservative candidates for the midterm election which created a split between the more conservative Republicans that supported Taft and the progressive Republicans.
