The number of employed women increased by 50% to 6 million. Women worked in manufacturing for war purposes increased by 141% but women were paid lower wages than men. Also, working women were viewed as a temporary situation and as substitutes until the end of the war and then they were encouraged togo home again. This increase in women's employment was because of labor shortages because men were at war and because an increase in demand for military supplies.
