Part of the fight for equality in the Progressive Era was action for African Americans. With the big economic gap causing high rates of poverty and discrimination, African Americans fought for recognition of their problems. Two leaders became known, Booker T Washington and Du Bois. Washington’s stress on economics began with his fight for better wages and education for African Americans. Du Bois’ stress on civil rights includes continuing the fight for equal rights for African Americans and ensuring the need for equal economic opportunity.
