Religious rivalry swept through the United States during the early 19th century and were partly the reaction to the rationalism had was popular during the Enlightenment and the American Revolution. Calvinist teachings were being rejected by believers in more liberal and forgiving views. The Second Great Awakening began among educated people such as Reverend Timothy Dwight the president of Yale College. Dwight’s campus revivals motivated a generation of young men to become evangelical preachers. These preachers were audience centered and easily understandable to the uneducated, they spoke of the opportunity of salvation for all.
