1970s
- A majority of the animated shows created in the west were from Hanna-Barberra
- They made at least 50 shows were made in this decade.
- However, most of their content of this decade had been spin-offs of their works from the 60s.
- Most of their "new" content of this decade was also blatant rip-offs of Scooby Doo, with a group of teenagers solving mysteries while accompanied by a wacky non-human sidekick.
- Some examples of these shows include: Jabberjaw, The Funky Phantom, Speed Buggy, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids, Gooby and the Ghost Chasers, Clue Club, Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels, Buford and the Galloping Ghost, The New Shmoo.
1980s
- Many cartoons of this period had generic and formulaic plots and episodes.
- Very shallow in terms of characters and story depth.
- Always had a lot of characters, with many sharing the same designs/silhouettes/body types so the toy companies could save money on toy molds.
- Many of these shows were cheaply made, as they had stiff choppy animation, would constantly go off-model, and were littered with animation errors.
examples include: Transformers, She-Ra, My Little Pony, G.I. Joe.
1990s
Counterculture was on the rise in the west during the 90s.
The repressive and forced conformity of tradition prevalent in the earlier decades was being rebelled against.
This counterculture resulted in many cartoons of this decade having:
- Loose, stylised artstyles that allowed for exaggerations of poses and facial expressions for more expressiveness
- Having characters that were not always 100% morally in the right
- Having a lot of gross-out humour
- Having plots that would not be written for the sake of having a clear moral or message
- Boundaries were being pushed in what could be depicted in animated media, which led to more plots with nuanced or mature writing.
