Part of the progressive movement included changing the common politician from a wealthy, born into wealth man to a common, self-made man. If politicians understood the problems of the common people firsthand then more movements would be done. One mayor in Ohio came from a self-made background and as he was one of the first progressive leaders he ignited a lot of change such as free kindergartens night schools and even public playgrounds. He fought for equal opportunities for all, making Public Utilities and services available for all.
