Descrizione:

Part of the social movement of the Progressive Era was equal opportunity for all, among which highlighted the importance of voter participation. In order to make a political idea become real gathering followers was only half of the battle but gaining votes what is the guarantee. Some voter advocates and members of political parties would use an illegal tactic of intimidating voters, which would ensure the gain votes by watching their votes be casted. This is unfair tactic was soon banned and the United States adopted a system that was once to use in Australia called the secret ballot where voters would have their own secret booth to cast their votes. The elections also changed with the introduction of direct primaries, where politicians would win or become a candidate through the votes of the people in each state. The progressives continued to modify the Democratic system in elections by altering the process of which US senators were elected. Rather than having US senators be chosen by each state's legislators the people now voted this became known as the direct election of US senators. In addition, new amendments were made to constitutions to ensure the elected officials we're being fair for the benefit of the people not just gaining power. The progressives use two methods one called the initiative, which voters would pressure the legislature to pass or deny a bill, and the other, new referendum in which citizens would vote on such a bill. The progressives also introduced a system called the recall in which if citizens believe officials were passing unfair bills, they could fight them. All these movements introduced by the progressives would give citizens more power rather than just the central government.
