The U.S. government refused to protect Indian lands from settlers despite the existence of treaties. As white settlers continued to encroach on Indian land, violent clashes between Indians, the U.S. military and white settlers increased. In the battle, Lakota Indians massacred Colonel Custer and his troops, but the U.S. army then engaged in a fierce counter attack and ultimately destroyed the Lakota Nation.
