The social progressivism of the late 19th century, eventually led to increased religious advocacy for greater morality and restrained social behavior. Especially in the South, and midwest, Protestant Fundamentalism which preached the literal meaning of the Bible, flourished and played a key role in the progressive movement to prohibit the sale of alcohol. In the South, the fundamentalist movement succeeded in banning the sale of alcohol in 21 states. In the South and midwest, (the bible belt) people felt most threatened by secular modern life. The significance of this movement, was that it contributed to the practice in the U.S. of religious movements such as the Christian Right and the Moral Majority in the twenties century of engaging in political advocacy and moving governments to pass legislation that is supported by religious movements.
