Classical ideas: elegant, natural, simple, clear, formally closed, universally appealing

Defining factors
-Between and overlapping Baroque and Romantic styles
-emphasis on melody over relatively light accompaniment
-simple, clearly articulated harmonic plans; periodic phrasing
-clearly delineated forms based on contrast between themes, keys, stable and unstable passages, and sections with different functions -contrasts of mood, style, and figuration both between and within movements.

Transition out of Baroque
Composers were starting to move away from writing primarily religious music, like Bach did, and they were transitioning into more concert works for popular audiences. Music was no longer just for aristocrats, noblemen or the highly religious. Composers thus vastly expanded their target audience and started writing for the general public as well.
