The Klu Klux Klan, or simply the KKK, a white supremacist group, began to rise in membership in the 1870s. The main goal of the KKK was to intimidate African Americans and even go as far as to commit violent acts such as lynching. This led to increased fears in the African American community due to the Klan almost always randomly selecting their targets.
