Robert Fulton invented the steamboat, the reason it was so important at the time is that steamboats greatly reduced both the time and expense of shipping goods to distant markets. For this reason, they were enormously important in the growth and consolidation of the U.S. economy before the Civil War.

Impact on The United States. The building of the transcontinental railroad opened up the American West to more rapid development. The railroad also facilitated westward expansion, escalating conflicts between Native American tribes and settlers who now had easier access to new territories.
