Lowell's factories were 19th century textile mills operating in the town of Lowell, Massachusetts, named after Francis Cabot Lowell; He introduced a new manufacturing system called the "Lowell system", also known as the "Waltham-Lowell system.
Francis Cabot Lowell sought to create an efficient manufacturing process in the United States that was different from what he saw in Britain. His vision was based on his "great faith in the people of New England" and the employees "would be housed and nurtured by the company and would remain employed for only a few years rather than form a permanently oppressed underclass.
