Beginning after the end of World War II, this period has been commonly labeled as a direct response to modernism. The ending period is rumoured to have ended about 1990, but we dare not to declare it closed. The development of poststructuralist literary theory and criticism is a relevant feature of this age. A couple of the most notable writers of the period include Samuel Beckett, Joseph Heller, Anthony Burgess, John Fowles, Penelope M. Lively, and Iain Banks.
