The Steamboat was useful/important because it made transportation more efficient. Another transportation was the wind-powered boats that could travel up stream quickly. A canal is an artificial waterway constructed to allow the passage of boats or ships inland or to convey water for irrigation. Chile. Bío-Bío Canal was a famous canal. The First highway built entirely with federal funds was called the National Road. The National Road benefited unifying the young country. The Amount of railroad mileage 1830? 1860 was able to compete more effectively in the resource-rich Midwest with 30,000 miles of tracks laid by 1860. The Railroad expansion was important because it help facilitated international trade.
