The Renaissance The Renaissance was a period of European cultural, artistic, political and economic changes which started in Florence, Italy around 1350/1400 till 1650. The word Renaissance means ‘rebirth’. Not only did the view on the world change during this period, but the view on individuals as well. Where people were first seen as one big group (nobles, peasants), the people now started looking at the individual.
The Renaissance in Britain The Renaissance in Britain started in the late 15th century, later than the rest of the world. This is because of: - The hundred years war - War of the roses
War brings instability and therefore the Renaissance started later in Britain.
Cultural changes: - Education - Music sacred -> secular - Literature (vernacular language) - Philosophers and intellectuals People started having interest again for the classical times (Roman & Greek)
The Renaissance was the period of humanists: Scholars who used writings from the Greek & Romans to understand the world, which created curiosity. They wanted to clarify things through science, rather than through religion. Secularism: The belief that religion should not affect society.
