After Boyce earned his fast-track graduate degree from Princeton Seminary, he pastored a church for roughly four years. In 1855, he accepted a teaching offer at Furman University but was soon compelled to establish a new seminary for Baptist southerners. In 1859, SBTS was born, and he filled the President’s role (and, eventually, accepted the title) until his death. Boyce stuck to his mission to build up the seminary, though numerous opportunities sought to draw him elsewhere. Notably, he also served as the President of the SBC for eight year-long terms. Boyce’s vision for the establishment of a Baptist seminary profoundly and favorably impacted the SBC and its enduring educational ministry.
