Not long after his conversion as a teenager, Rice pursued a degree at Williams College which aroused his passion toward international missionary work. He then attended Andover Seminary where he met Adoniram Judson with whom he later worked alongside as missionaries sent by the Congregationalists to India. Due to a theological shift to Baptist theology, Rice separated from the Congregationalists and permanently returned to America to establish a robust Baptist missions agency (local and foreign) called the Triennial Convention. Through his new convention, Rice was personally involved in establishing 25 missions and 15 colleges and sending 112 missionaries. Rice’s work was indispensable to the formation of the SBC and global missions, making him a valuable figure in Southern Baptist history.
