The Battle of Nanking took place in 1938. Nanking was the capital of China. Which makes it more than reasonable for Japan to invade. After the loss in the battle of Shanghai, China’s nationalist leader Chiang Kai-Shek evacuated all official troops from Nanking for the fear of the death of competent soldiers. This leaves untrained troops to defend Nanking. Chiang Kai-Shek also did not allow anyone, soldier or civilian, to leave Nanking and said Nanking was to be defended at all cost. The period of the event spanned for 6 weeks(December 1937 - January 1938). Along with taking over the capital, Japanese soldiers committed genocide, rape, and looted both the soldiers and civilians of Nanking. The death toll of the event is heavily debated and was estimated to be from 100,000 to 300,000 deaths. These atrocities were done under the command of Matsui Iwane, who ordered soldiers to demolish the Capital. Buildings were looted and burnt. People were raped and killed. The event caused much loss and grief to the Chinese, this worsens the Sino-Japanese relationship more than ever. This is because Japan caused mass amounts of suffering for the Chinese. This fuels their hatred and a grudge to hold against the Japanese as well as decreasing their eagerness to forgive the Japanese.
However, Japan faced major backlash as many recognised the event as atrocious and crimes of war. In response, many turned against Japan. Leaving Japan with fewer allies and more enemies. This is a turning point as Japan loses power and faces more power against them.
