A high protective tariff(or tax) was signed into law by U.S government. South Carolinian- specially john C. Calhoun strongly disagreed with the high tariffs and felt that the targeted the south unfairly. South Carolina nullified the federal law, calling it unconstitutional until a "force bill" was threatened which would bring the national army into the state to make sure the law was followed. A compromise took place. South Carolina would pay the tax if the U.S government lowered the tax.
