The Harlem Renaissance was a period of African American cultural revolution. As many former slaves and decedents of former slaves moved north in search of greater opportunity, many found themselves in cities, particularly Harlem in New York. With many more freedoms in the north, African Americans found themselves able to pursue artistic endeavors, creating many genres of music, art, and literature that were uniquely African, Southern traditional, and yet very progressive. Thanks to the Harlem renaissance, we today have jazz, hip-hop, and American Modernism art.
