Ada Lovelace (10 dic 1815 anni – 27 nov 1852 anni)
Descrizione:
Augusta Ada King aka Ada Lovelace (December 10, 1815 – November 27, 1852), Computer Programmer
Life:
Ada was born to the poet Lord Byron and Lady Byron. She was an only child, and her father separated from her mother shortly after she was born. He died when she was 8 years old. Ada grew up and pursued her studies. She married William King in 1835 and became Countess of Lovelace in 1838. She had 3 children named Byron, Anne Isabella and Ralph Gordon.
Contributions to Science:
Ada is known as the first computer programmer. She wrote “notes” for the Analytical Engine, which is thought to be the first code written for a computer. Her mother ensured that she was tutored in mathematics and science at a young age with hope that it would keep her more “sane” than her father. In fact, she described her approach to be “poetical science”. She worked with many other people in her field, including Charles Babbage, known as “The father of computers”, who became a good friend. It is thought that the paper she wrote transitioned the field from simple calculation to computation and the thought that it could express entities other than quantities. She had aspirations of the program extending to simulating a neural network, which never came to fruition.
Fun Facts:
She started a gambling syndicate with several male friends that failed miserably when her mathematical model for successful large bets did not predict probability reliably.
Death:
Unfortunately, she died at the age of 36 in 1852 of uterine cancer, exacerbated by her doctor’s blood letting, which was believed to help treat the illness at the time.
