2. This was an effort made by John Brown to initiate a slave revolt in Southern States by taking over the US arsenal

3. The last straw for the South who saw this as a direct attack by the North to destroy the Southern economy by starting slave revolts. Though the North condemned Brown's radical actions the South was not in favor of believing the North.
