Jacksons military leadership in the revolutionary war earned him fame as a national hero and was a huge political figure through the 1820's and 1830's. Due to his popularity he was elected president in 1829. He took office right as the country was developing parties and he represented the democratic party. Jackson was a large supporter of states rights and also wanted to extend slavery into the western states. However his reputation today is destroyed as he forced the relocation of native American tribes living east of the Mississippi river.
