A high protective tariff (or tax) was signed into law by the U.S government. South Carolina- specifically John C. Calhoun strongly disagreed with the high tariff and felt they targeted the South unfairly. South Carolina nullified the federal law calling it unconstitutional until a "forced bill was threated which would bring the national army into the state to make sure the law was followed. A compromise took place. South Carolina would pay the tax if the U.S government lowered the tax.
