A huge protective tariff (or tax) was signed into law by the U.S government. South Carolinian's - specifically John C. Calhoun strongly disagreed with the high tariffs and felt that they targeted the South unfairly. South Carolina nullified the federal law, calling it unconstitutional until a "force bill" was threatened which would bring the national army into the state to make sure the law was followed. a compromise took place.
