The Egyptian Empire ruled Canaan (the Land of Israel) as a colony and subjugated the local people. Possible origin for the exodus from Egypt/Egyptian exile narrative. Israelites likely did not yet have a distinct identity within Canaan at this time, but legends of this time period would have been passed down to Israelite society.
