The 100 years war was actually a 116 year war, between the French and the English. Philip VI was king of France at the beginning of the war and King Edward III was the ruler of England. It began with a territory dispute, the French taking all of English land until one piece was left, Guyenne. King Philip then declared himself king of France, and the war began. This war brought the formation of new technology that changed future warfare. For example, the longbow, gun powder, and cannons were created during the 100 Years War. The fighting styles used also were revolutionary. The use of missionaries brought a new sense of violence and merciless fighting. Mercenaries were brought in from different places to fight for either side. The noun definition of a mercenary is: a professional soldier hired to serve in a foregine army. The adjective from is: a person, hired concerned with making money at the expense of ethics. They came in to kill and plunder for compensation, there was no honor or mercy in their fighting.
