(Term 2) A plan put into action by Mao Zedong with which he intended to change China from an agrarian economy to a communist society. The plan required the people to join in communes and work for their government. This campaign resulted in The Great Famine.

1. It showed that Mao Zedong didn't really care about the Chinese lower class people. The people may not have seen it at the time, but we can look back and see the wrong in Zedong's actions.

2. It shows us that total government control can be devastating for the people. In communism, if one careless leader makes a mistake, many people may suffer because of it.

3. It made people who were hurt by its effects more appreciative of freedom and support.
