Descrizione:
- General Alexander Vandegrift led the troops invading Guadalcanal to success
- The key island they aimed to capture was called Guadalcanal which the Japanese had previously built an airfield on
- The Allied goal was to gain control of territory in the Solomon Islands, in order to help protect nearby Australia. The battle began when 19,000 troops stormed the island, each side won at certain points until the Japanese eventually fled the island which was called the "Island of Death" due to its terrible heat and jungle conditions described as "hell"
- The battle gave the Allies control of the strategic island and became the start of the Allied strategy of "Island Hopping" which was a combination of air, land, and sea forces to capture certain islands while also staying away from areas with heavy enemy concentration
