Motet Beginnings (1 gen 1200 anni – 1 gen 1250 anni)
Descrizione:
A motet began as a polyphonic work with a different text in two or more voices, originating when Notre Dame musicians began adding latin text to the upper discant voice. This was a big opportunity for compositional creativity outside of performances in mass. Composers would keep the tenor, but (1) write a different text for the duplum in latin or french, (2) added more voices, (3) create a double or triple motet (where extra voices all have own text), or (4) delete the original duplum and write one or more new voices with their own texts. The cantus firmus is the existing melody (usually from plainchant) that a polyphonic work is built on.
