Jean Calvin (1 gen 1509 anni – 1 gen 1564 anni)

Descrizione:

He was a French theologian and the founder of Calvinism. As a boy, he was educated through a catholic church scholarship. At 24 or 25 (1533 or 34) he had a religious conversion, breaking away from the catholic church and renouncing his scholarship. He was going to pursue intellectualism, but when he was forced to take a traveling detour through Geneva, he came into contact with the Reformation there. Calvin remained in Geneva to help Reformer Guillaume Farel structure the Reformation in Geneva. Both were expelled from Geneva in 1538 for disagreeing with the town’s government on the role of government and religion. He returned to Geneva in 1541 and remained until his death. Reformers crowded into Geneva as they were persecuted in France. He aimed to strip churches of any distractions from God, which included musically. Reformed churches used metrical psalms, which were published in psalters. In church, these were sung in unaccompanied unison, but could be sung polyphonically at home.
