He was the German founder of Lutheranism. Ordained to the priesthood in 1507, he was an active Catholic until 1517, when he posted his theses in Wittenberg. In this new denomination, he wanted to make everything (including music) more accessible to the lay people. Lutherans had chorales, which were congregational hymns in German. Their main sources were adaptations of Gregorian chant, German devotional songs, a secular song, or something new. A chorale motet is when a German chorale is the cantus firmus for a polyphonic work. Using music familiar to the lay congregation helped to both make it accessable and asserted its authority against the catholic manifestation of their music.
