Machaut was the most important Ars Nova composer, with 23 motets (20 isorhythmic) and over 140 works. He brought together the traditions of secular monophony and the novelty of the Ars Nova. He began to experiment with the idea of adding accidentals “for the sake of beauty”, and Vitry’s influence on him is unknown. He preserved his works extremely well.
