Men's Dress (Early 17th c.)
:
Garments: Fallen band collars or soft ruffs for shirt. Falling band collars (lace collars)
Doublet, raised waistline, peplum, and pea-sized buttons. Breeches, capes, and cassocks (coats cut with wide full sleeves that were throughout the body and ended at the thigh or below)
Hair, hats: Long hair, lovelock (early form of hair tie aka braids) (cavalier) hat with plume
Foot, leg coverings: shoes and boots with straight soles and heels. Boot hose, knee-high hosiery under boots, spur leathers or latches
Late (to 1660) Men's Dress: Bloused shirt, petticoat breeches or rinegraves, doublets, steeple hats, capes.
Foot, and leg coverings: canons (ruffles attached to breeches) heeled shoes with bows.
Late (1660-1700) Men's Dress:
Garments: three-piece suit, coat or justacorpse (knee-length coats), vests, waist coats, breeches simpler and more narrow
Necker: crabat (like a pilgrim tie)
Hair, Hats: Long, curling hair or the periwig, small wispy mustaches, tricorn hat,
Foot, legwear: heeled shoes w/ buckles, hose often matches ensemble
Women's Dress:
Garments early 17th c.: gowns similar to Elizabethan era but softer. Moving toward mid cen. they wore bodice w/ high waist , stomacher, puffed sleeves , 3/4 and cinched, low-neckline (bertha collar), modest and secretive, skirts and jackets with Basques (an extension of the bodice and waistline), capes
Late 17th cen garments aka gowns: elongated stiffed bodice (busk). Necklines: low and horizontal, cape collar, overskirt split at center front, contrasting secret beneath, full elbow length sleeves, mantua w/ bustles
Hair,headress: chignon at back, soft waves framed face at front. Cavalier and capotain hats, a la fontage (late), commode (late).
