The Hundred Year War was a very long conflict between the kingdoms of France and England. Once Charles IV of France died, the crown moved to Philip VI of France because Charles IV did not have a son. The king of England, Edward III, was a relative to Charles IV and demanded to be ruler of France since he was a descendant of the previous king. Philip VI refused to give up his throne, and thus led to a war that lasted one hundred and sixteen years. There were also other reasons that kept the fight going for over a hundred years, such as disputes over certain areas of land, the support for Scotland by the French, and control of the valuable wool trade. Once Philip had been chosen by the French to be their king, Edward invaded France and asserted himself into the French throne. After years of fighting, a new king was chosen: Henry V. Henry was English. In southern France, many people did not agree with or accept the English rule. The English began to invade southern France in 1428; however, a peasant girl by the name of Joan of Arc became a leader of the French army. She said that this was a vision from God. She led the French to a victory in 1429, and led the French to several more victories, but she was captured by the English and burned at the stake. The Hundred Year War was horrible for the French. It brought misery, the plague, war, and famine to their country. If the Hundred Year War had never happened, there would not be differences in classes, no rights for middle or lower classes, interclass marriages, and new technologies for war. As you can see, the Hundred Year War brought many new changes.
