In 1848, multiple revolutions had started to break out, in favor of Italian unification. After having fled to South America in 1834 after the failed Mazzinian insurrection, Garibaldi returned to Italy in 1848 amidst these revolutions. In the following unsuccessful First Italian War of Independence, Garibaldi won minor victories.

In 1849, after a crushing defeat at the battle of Novara, the uprisings ended and the old regimes were once again put into place. The Pope was forced to flee after Italians protested his decision to flee, and Garibaldi moved to Rome to support the recently proclaimed Roman Republic.
