The Great Depression was an economic depression, the most acute in history. The American stock market crashed on October 29, 1929, later known as Black Tuesday. Countries were affected worldwide. Unemployment rates reached 23% in the United States, and even 33% in some countries. International trade dropped as personal income, taxes and production dropped. The negative effects of the Great Depression only wore off with the start of WWII.
