Though all of Europe suffered during WWI, Germany was among the countries that suffered the most. During this time and due to the social and economic despair, Adolf Hitler rose to power under the pretense of nationalism. He created the Axis Powers comprised of Germany, Italy and Japan in opposition to countries like Great Britain, France, and later the United States. Though conflicts were severe in Europe and Asia, the United States remained neutral until on December 7, 1941, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and the United States entered the war and helped end the war win Japan with nuclear bombs. WWII rearranged the world powers and was the precursor of the Cold War.
