Salt March (8 ore 32 min, 12 marzo 1930 anni – 12 ore 29 min, 6 apr 1930 anni)

Descrizione:

The Salt March, a peaceful protest, was a demonstration led by Gandhi to protest against the Salt Acts, laws which restricted Indians to buy salt only from the British government. In 1930, Gandhi, along with his followers, walked about 240 miles to the seacoast, where they started to produce salt. The Salt March not only angered the British officials, but also stirred nationwide nationalism, as more Indians began marching to the British saltworks, aiming to stop them from producing more salt. During their walk, the Indians were beaten by British police officers, yet all of them followed Gandhi’s ideal: the policy of nonviolence. An American journalist witnessed the whole event, seeing people “writhing in pain with fractured skulls or broken shoulders,” yet still marched peacefully without defending themselves. The journalist’s description spread around the globe, as news began to report the story, triggering worldwide attention and support to the Indian independence movement. Even though at the end Gandhi and other 60,000 people were arrested, the Salt March is seen as the best example of civil disobedience, letting the British government realize they could not rule without the Indians’ consent. Eventually, this protest and other independence movements gained the Indians limited self-rule. In specific, the Government of India Act passed in 1935 granted local self-government and limited democratic elections.
