Bartolomeu Dias was born in 1450 and died in 15. He was a nobleman of the Portuguese royal household, and a Portuguese explorer. Dias was probably in his mid- to late-30s in 1486 when King João II appointed him to head an expedition in search of a sea route to India. He was the first European to sail around the southernmost tip of Africa in 1488, which sett up the route from Europe to Asia later on.
