- in the 490s it was against him that the Ionian and other east Greeks (and some Phoenicians of Cyprus) revolted unsuccessfully
- in 490 - Darius sent a fleet to Athens to punish them for helping with the revolt - he was then defeated
- Persians then responded, but Darius had been succeeded by his son Xerxes
