The Black Plague Years (1 gen 1346 anni – 1 gen 1353 anni)
Descrizione:
The Black Plague, also known as the Bubonic plague, was one of the greatest plagues ever, killing around 70 million people in Europe alone. The Plague started in Asia and traveled along the silk road through rats and fleas, which humans inadvertently brought with them on caravans and ships. The Plague eventually reached Europe when 12 ships docked at the port of Messina on the Italian peninsula. Citizens went out to see the ships, and saw that many sailors were either gravely ill or dead. After seeing this they sent the ships away, but the damage was already done. These ships later sailed all over Europe, spreading the plague as the went. After the plague had run through the population and eventually fizzled out, it brought new opportunities for many peasants, with the same demand for labor, but less people to do it, peasants were more valuable and got more rights. Whereas in the past peasant families stayed on the same farm for generations, this new generation was able to move around and gain new opportunities. One other group that did not benefit from the plague however was the clergy, or the church, when they claimed that god would protect people from the plague, and it didn't work, people began to question how connected to god the church really was. This created a new age of skepticism that led to some Renaissance ideas, showing that the plague was a major factor in launching Europe into the Renaissance.
