World War One (28 lugl 1914 anni – 11 nov 1918 anni)
Descrizione:
World War One, often referred to as WW1, was also known as the Great War. It was the first world war, which is evident in the name, and many countries were involved in it. World War 1 started after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. In WW1, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire (the Central Powers) fought against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan and the United States (the Allied Powers). New military technologies and the horrors of trench warfare showed unprecedented levels of carnage and destruction. When the war ended and the Allied Powers claimed victory, more than 16 million people - both soldiers and civilians - had lost their lives during the course of the war.
At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, World War One finally ended after several long years of war-ridden terrors. This day is known worldwide as Armistice Day, and in Australia is the day we honour our fallen ANZAC (Australian New Zealand Army Corps) Soldiers. However, in the UK, it is known as Remembrance Sunday, and in the US, the memorable day is known as Veterans Day. In Australia, we usually refer to Armistice Day as ANZAC Day, or Remembrance Day, where we hold many traditions unique to Australia, such as making poppies out of materials such as tissue paper and pipe cleaners, standing for a minute of silence, "Lest We Forget", and more. Backtracking through time to the real date of Armistice Day, Germany, without supplies nor manpower, and with the imminent threat of defeat and invasion looming over their heads, signed an armistice agreement (hence the name Armistice Day) with the Allied Powers outside a railroad car in Compiégne, France.
