The Great Depression was the worst economic downturn in American history. It began with the stock market crash of October 1929 that wiped out millions of investors. Over the next several years, consumer spending decreased, causing businesses to go bankrupt and millions of Americans to lose their jobs. In 1933, President Roosevelt put in action his New Deal, a series of public projects designed to provide jobs for the people and reform the economy. The Great Depression ended around the late 1930s.
